I keep a 5-gallon water container in the hatch at all times. It’s mostly for emergencies but after a long day camping, hiking, or climbing the importance of having a fresh supply of water cannot be understated.
Keeping it cool, however, is always a big challenge. There’s nothing worse than drinking piping hot trunk water when you’re already exhausted and covered in sweat from the day’s activities. So when I saw YETI was coming out with a new water cooler my interest was certainly piqued. How will it compare to the $35 USGI water container I’ve used for the last 3 years?
Anything made by YETI hardly falls into the “need” category. After all, there are many cheap alternatives out there that compare favorably. Though, there’s no denying they are an innovative company and if you want a product built without compromise you will never go wrong with YETI.
And YETI’s Silo 6G is unquestionably innovative. Considering their rotomolded construction and pressure-injected insulation technology, it’s sure to be a revelation in terms of durability and ability to keep water cold.
Other features include a large hatch for adding a bag of ice without hassle, a generous spigot, and a metal handle that doubles as extra protection for the spigot.
There are some drawbacks to the YETI design, however – mainly its size and weight. Empty, this thing weighs 16.5-pounds and when full you’re looking at a hefty 58-pounds.
Outside dimensions are 15 5/8” × 18” × 15 1/2”, so you won’t be able to fill it in the kitchen sink and it will take up a significant amount of cargo area. But the same thing can be said about other solutions. In fact, I can’t fill my current setup without a hose attachment for the faucet.
Nevertheless, the YETI Silo 6G looks to be a solid piece of gear for anyone that spends a lot of time outdoors or in the heat. It’s available later this summer.
