No statewide grid. A different local utility in every city

Alaska's geography means there's no single statewide electric grid the way most states have. Communities that aren't connected by road or transmission line often run entirely separate power systems. Chugach Electric Association serves Anchorage. Golden Valley Electric Association serves Fairbanks. Alaska Electric Light & Power serves Juneau, which isn't even connected to Alaska's main road system. Matanuska Electric Association serves Wasilla, the City and Borough of Sitka runs its own municipal utility, and Homer Electric Association serves Kenai.

None of these utilities compete with each other. Each one is simply the only option for its region, with no retail electricity market anywhere in the state. Enstar Natural Gas delivered gas at sampled addresses in Anchorage, Wasilla and Kenai, the three cities connected by Alaska's limited natural gas infrastructure along the Railbelt; Juneau, Fairbanks and Sitka aren't on that system.

Alaska utility questions, answered

Why does every Alaska city seem to have a different electric company?

Alaska's communities aren't all connected by a shared power grid the way most states are. Many towns run their own isolated electric system. Chugach Electric Association serves Anchorage, Golden Valley Electric Association serves Fairbanks, and so on, each independent of the others.

Is Chugach Electric Association a co-op?

Yes. Chugach Electric Association, which served every sampled Anchorage address, is a member-owned electric cooperative, as are several of the other utilities in our sample like Golden Valley Electric Association (Fairbanks), Matanuska Electric Association (Wasilla), and Homer Electric Association (Kenai).

Does Alaska have retail electric choice?

No. There's no retail electricity market in Alaska. Whichever local utility or cooperative serves your community, Chugach, Golden Valley, Alaska Electric Light & Power, Matanuska, Sitka's municipal utility, or Homer Electric, is your only option.

Who provides natural gas in Alaska?

Enstar Natural Gas delivered gas at sampled addresses in Anchorage, Wasilla and Kenai. The cities connected to Alaska's limited natural gas pipeline network along the Railbelt. Juneau, Fairbanks and Sitka aren't on that system, so gas service there works differently or isn't available the same way.
