Natural gas DTE Detroit

DTE's east side, Consumers Energy's west

Southeast Michigan, Detroit, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, runs on DTE Energy for both electric and gas delivery. Head west to Grand Rapids or north to Flint and the utility changes to Consumers Energy, which also handles both services in its territory. Two big investor-owned utilities split most of the state's population between them.

None of this involves choosing a supplier: Michigan doesn't run a retail electric market, so whichever utility holds your address delivers your power and bills you directly, full stop. Water and sewer are handled by individual city departments, and our sampling doesn't yet have confident data there, which is exactly why checking your specific address matters more than any citywide assumption.

Michigan utility questions, answered

Who is my electric company in Michigan?

It depends on where in the state you are. DTE Energy serves Detroit, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor and Dearborn, while Consumers Energy serves Grand Rapids and Flint. Michigan doesn't have retail electric choice, so whichever utility holds your address is the only one you'll deal with. The lookup tells you which.

Is DTE also my gas company?

In DTE's electric territory, yes. DTE Energy delivers both electricity and natural gas at the addresses we've sampled in Detroit, Ann Arbor and Dearborn. Confirm with the lookup, since gas and electric territory don't always follow identical lines.

Do I get to choose my electricity provider in Michigan?

No. Michigan doesn't run a retail choice market for electricity. The utility that holds your address, whether that's DTE Energy or Consumers Energy, delivers your power and is who you sign up with directly. There's no separate retailer to shop for.

Who handles water in Michigan cities?

Water is run city by city rather than by DTE or Consumers Energy, and we don't yet have confident sampled data on it for these cities. Use the lookup to check what applies at your specific address before you assume.
