This is one of the common blockers in utility signup forms. The short version: match the utility’s records, finish the missing step, then confirm your start date.

Enter the unit exactly as the lease writes it, including leading zeros and letters, and put it in the unit field rather than appending it to the street line. If the building uses a label the post office does not (Unit 2R, Rear, Basement, Upper), the utility usually follows the building's own convention because that is how the meter was recorded. When several formats seem plausible, the meter's own label — often on a sticker in the utility closet — is the authoritative one.
In a multi-unit building each meter belongs to a specific unit, and the utility bills the meter rather than the street address. Without the unit, the request cannot be tied to a service point — which is why the form rejects it even though the building is clearly in the system.
Duplexes, townhomes, and accessory dwelling units are the awkward middle. Mail may be delivered without a unit while the utility still tracks two separate meters as A and B. If your address has never needed a unit for mail but the utility insists on one, ask the landlord which meter serves your side of the building.
Utility Wallet starts service with your utilities for free. You confirm the details; we submit them and chase the usual follow-ups. This page stays on the symptom and the fix, whether you finish the signup yourself or hand it over.
If the correct unit still fails, the building may be master-metered, meaning the landlord holds one account for the whole property and utilities are billed through rent. Worth confirming before you spend more time on the form.
From how utility signup portals behave and what utilities publish about their own requirements: what the message is asking for, what the company is checking, and the step that clears it. Anything company-specific — a phone number, a deposit rule, a portal quirk — lives on that provider's page in the directory.
Enter your address once. We take it from there.
